Wierd and wonderful week

Og posted about this coffee table... I liked the "Doesn't have any weird splotches under black lights" bit, this struck a chord with my penchant for the CSI TV series.
But sometimes life is weirder than a TV show when you live in a crazy world like ours... yep, Bongani our top criminal on the most wanted list calmly walked out of court this week!

I loved the comment on one of the reports... "We warned the police that this person had escaped before and therefore they should tighten their security."
Like stating the obvious? so if you see Bongani... call the cops.

Which brings me to the looting in Britain... what were they thinking when they decided to bring up a generation without any discipline? Now they are slightly flabbergasted that things turned out the way they did... I nominate the Nanny State PC Politicians for the weekly award...

"For me it is clear that the root cause of this mindless selfishness is the same thing that I’ve spoken about for years. It is a complete lack of responsibility in our society. It is as much a moral problem as a political problem." David Cameron

Dude? Who stole my wheels!

This guy had issues with his car yesterday... unfortunately he left it jacked up near the taxi rank on campus... this morning it was sans wheels!

Amazingly this happened in a location that has high def CCTV surveillance... although I doubt the perps will be found...
"The guy who invented the first wheel was an idiot. The guy who invented the other three, HE was a genius." Sid Ceasar

Eh? Polonium, Balonium.

Whoever wrote up this screed over at News24 or their affiliate deserves to be fried in a nuclear reactor! I am no rocket scientist nor nuclear physicist but this Q&A is full of baloney.
Take for instance this howler...
"Q: What constitutes a dangerous dose of radiation?
A: Radiation is measured in Sieverts, named after Rolf Sievert, a Swedish physicist who worked extensively on radiation doses. Mild radiation sickness can occur with exposure to 0.5 to 1 Sieverts - as little as one-millionth of a gram - and a dose of 80 Sieverts or more is thought to result in immediate death. A dose of four to 10 Sieverts - less than a gram (0.04 ounces) - could cause death in two to four weeks."

Umm... one millionth of a gram of what precisely? Polonium? Uranium? Americium-241? which by the way is 10 times more dangerous than Polonium-210.
Once again the MSM has not done it's homework and is spouting a lot of pseudo science to make itself look important! and they say bloggers are not professional or qualified to comment on matters of current interest!
Here is another... actually the first question and it's pathetic half answer...
Q: What is radiation?
A: Radiation is the transfer of energy. There are two basic types of radiation: Ionising Radiation - in the air, water, food, soil, and in all living organisms. Most of the radiation absorbed by humans comes from natural environmental sources. People also are exposed to radiation through X-rays taken for medical reasons."

They do not even mention what the other type is but ramble on about natural radiation and x-rays...
This is what Wiki has to say on the matter...
Radiation in physics is the process of emitting energy in the form of waves or particles. Various types of radiation may be distinguished, depending on the properties of the emitted energy/matter, the type of the emission source, properties and purposes of the emission, etc. When used by the general public, the word "radiation" commonly refers to ionizing radiation.
They should just have pointed the reader to the relevant Wiki page as far as I am concerned, that would have made it clearer than the muddy puddle they presented.

Andreas’ Personal Flying Suit

Andeas Petzoldt has been tinkering with this rig for years by the sounds of things, I wish him luck in finding a test pilot! As Lore Sjöberg mentions on his blog;

"Of course, it's hard not to imagine the test flight. With great ebullience, Andreas soars into the heavens. He sneers at gravity with contempt, a spurned mistress, a whore who embraces all but him. But suddenly he hears a horrifying choke and shudder and a sickening vertigo creeping up from his genitalia and into his bowels as he plummets back down to the ground, strapped to over 200 pounds of highly-explosive rocket fuel and whirring metal blades."

I am slightly more optimistic after visiting the site promoting Andreas's passion project and it would be amazing to have such a machine.

Pondering the question...

was this a "Strafing Run" by ET's? You be the judge...
I would rather use Occam's Razor by comparing this to what we have seen in recent history, that gives me one answer and that is asteroids/comets/other bits of space rock still floating around the sun that happen to get torn up and come down in a line like what we saw happening on Jupiter a few years ago with the Shoemaker-Levy comet demise...
My question would also be... Where are the remains of the "target"?
That would be the kicker...

Mud flood threatens Java residents

Mud flood threatens Java residents This is something that no one seemed to have bargained for, I also realize someone has to bear the brunt of the locals displeasure but sometimes nature bites back... at least it did not trigger a volcano!

Who needs Red Bull!

I always smile when I see a Red Bull advert but seems like this personal wing story is actually old news!

The SkyRay was first flown in 2002 already but the proposed use for Special Forces by ESG seems to be a latter idea. I love the header on their site "ESG gives you wings – the parachute system for special operations".
In any case I think this is amazing use of current technology in composite materials.
I wonder if we will ever see a Red Bull air race using these?

The Hichhikers Guide to Prime Numbers is 42...

Who said Sci Fi had no factual basis! I am no Physicist or Mathematician but this is amazing... Douglas Adams probably imagined this but as he was not one of the above either the significance of his "theory" was just a theme of the book, now it seems it could be the theme of the Universe... Truth is stranger than fiction, especially when one delves into the workings of Quarks...
This quote from Douglas seems to be quite fitting;
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

Ho Hum

A very interesting topic is the low frequency hum that Earth generates, in the two and seven MHz range. Some research has come to light as to the processes involved:
Science pinpoints Earth's 'hum'
Earth's 'hum' springs from stormy seas
You can also get a lot off Google by using the phrase earth hum.
There are of course some other sources as well that have their own views, albeit very strange...
Taos Hum, Tones of Planet Earth
The Taos Hum
TAOS HUM HOMEPAGE
However the best case of strange views is here;
OUR PLANET IS EXPANDING
I suppose the Internet has made it possible for the weirdest of the weird to publish their ideas as well.
More to follow as I delve deeper...
