Thunder from the sky

Several bloggers like Ahab, AD and Skywriter have memed or mentioned their best aircraft, here are mine as well as the reasons why they have a place in my memory;
The Allie - SA-316 / SA-319 Alouette III

The Puma/Oryx
Both these Choppers were operated by 17 Squadron as well as others but I think 17 Sqd. are the blokes that pioneered Border Operations. To a soldier on the ground there was no better sound than that of the choppers coming in for a Casevac, bringing in supplies or support troops or causing Mayhem to the terrorists with the .50 Brownings or 20mm Cannon on one of the Allie Gunships of the Romeo Mike force at Ondangwa.

The Imp - AEROMACCHI ATLAS MB326M IMPALA MARK I AND MARK II
"Eagle One this is Zero Three Delta! Acquire target at Romeo Victor... Green smoke Foxtrot Foxtrot!" and then the boys in Blue would do the rest while the troopies hunkered down in hastily dug slit trenches and hoped the pilot was not colour blind.
The Dak - DOUGLAS C47 DAKOTA
Our lifeline in many ways, these old warbirds would drop the Bats during ops. and do the milk runs between bases as well, many a letter from home was brought north from Grooties in the belly of a Dakota.
The Herc - LOCKHEED C-130 HERCULES
There is nothing like blasting off from Mpacha airfield using JATO in one of these birds and watching some of the troopies turning green while you enjoy the G forces. The landings were pretty awesome as well, pilots used to use evasive tactics and dropping down in steep dives was one of them. Leaving your innards at 20 thousand feet is quite a thrill.

The Mirage - DASSAULT-BREGUET MIRAGE F.1, Mirage III, 111EZ, AND 111CZ
These were our ultimate backup and a few Cubans regretted tangling with our Top Gun's.

Sabre - CANADAIR CL13B SABRE MK VI
Korea was the proving ground for Jet Warfare and our pilots were in the thick of things once again.

Mustang - MUSTANG P-51D-20NA
As a kid I always wanted to fly one of these, only later did I learn that my mom's first fiancee was killed in Korea flying one...

Harvard - NORTH AMERICAN HARVARD
Tough and temperamental, I was told if one could learn to fly this critter one could fly any plane after that... if you survived that is...
Most of the pics come from the
SAAF Museum site.
Still need to tidy up the code and formatting of the page but I think you get the picture?
The quote sums up my feelings on having to use these wonderful machines, great as they were would it not have been better to have used the energy for peace?
"We merely want to live in peace with all the world, to trade with them, to commune with them, to learn from their culture as they may learn from ours, so that the products of our toil may be used for our schools and our roads and our churches and not for guns and planes and tanks and ships of war." Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890 - 1969)

Wednesday whackyness

MizMinka has a Monday Meme thing going so I am borrowing it for Wacky Wednesday!
Were you named after anyone? Yes, My dad's best friend's name as a first name and my dad's as second name, I use part of my name as Blogname, the meaning of my first name is "Bright Fame" and the second is a Scottish Clan name. My brothers also have two names each. Sort of a family tradition.
When was the last time you cried? Sunday, when I realised how much I have to be thankful about in my life.
Do you like your handwriting? It is mine but quite unreadable if older than a week, I prefer typing.
What is your favorite lunch meat? Pastrami with sweet mustard... preferably Leroi's.
Do you have kids? Yes, two and they are the best! I am so proud of both of them. They are the greatest gifts God has given me.
If you were another person would you be friends with you? Yes! One has to be friends with yourself to be friends with other people.
Do you use sarcasm a lot? Occasionally, when it seems fitting.
Do you still have your tonsils? Yes, and I rarely get ill. My immune system is still in one piece, not so my bones.
Would you bungee jump? Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in a heartbeat, I still want to skydive as well.
What did you have for breakfast? Wheatbix with milk and brown sugar.
What is your favorite cereal? Coco Pops! (Chocolate!) but it is a luxury, wheatbix is my staple.

Do you untie your shoes when you take them off? Yes if they have laces, otherwise they are slip on's or Bike Boots with Velcro.
Do you think you are strong? Yes, but I do not rely on my strenght alone, I have a helping hand that is always there when needed, thank you Jesus.
What is the first thing you notice about people? Eyes.
Red or pink? Red if I have to...

What is the least favorite thing about yourself? Procrastination! Need I say more?
Who do you miss the most? My Mom...

What color pants and shoes are you wearing? Grey cargo shorts, slip on ankle boots.
What was the last thing you ate? An apple...
What are you listening to right now? My mp3 collection... as I take a break from crunching numbers at work.
If you were a crayon, what color would you be? What?!
Favorite smells? Bacon frying, the smell of rain, coffee, the smells when MX bikes leave the start gate. Last one is a complex smell of petrol, burnt oil and damp earth... heavenly!
Ok, those are my answers, what you want to do with those snippets beats me, but it made me think of some memories and things I still want to do...

What happened on yours?

I do not usually take part in these meme things but this one over on Jock's place made me want to give it a bash. So here is mine for June 11...
Three Events That Occurred on My Birthday
1184 BC - Trojan War: Troy was sacked and burned, according to the calculations of Eratosthenes.
That is something I did not know! WOW
1776 - Continental Congress appoints Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston to a committee to draft a declaration of independence.
Cool!
1935 - Inventor Edwin Armstrong gives the first public demonstration of FM broadcasting in the United States, at Alpine, New Jersey.
And that was the start of the POP era and the springboard for music as we have it today as far as I am concerned.
Two People Who Share My Birthday
1910 - Jacques-Yves Cousteau, French explorer and inventor (d. 1997)
Cool!
1939 - Jackie Stewart, Scottish race car driver.
Never knew that my all time F1 hero was born on my birthday!
One Holiday Celebrated on My Birthday
Kamehameha Day, official state holiday of Hawaii, United States, in honor of its first monarch, celebrated with floral parades, hula competition, and festivals.
Always liked Hawaii...

The truth is out there Scully

Sometimes you get whacked on the head while surfing the interwebs... Skywriter aka "Scully" is one of these gifted writers that have mastered the craft and make one realise that there is so much to do and improve upon.
On the other hand I do not blog to impress but to put my own thoughts, feelings and emotions into digital diary format to help me understand myself better. But I still stand in awe when I get whacked...

Another truth is that I have been baring my soul both here and in the real world, this can sometimes cause soul burn. Just like exposing your skin to the summer sun can cause it to blister and peel your soul can get burnt by wearing your heart on your sleeve, extremely painful and known to cause either permanent scars or to heal with no evidence that this ever happened, other times it actually transforms you making the sacrifice sweeter than the sweetest muscadel. I now have the knowledge that I have found a friend more precious than a tumultuous affair and worthy beyond compare... why do I then still miss the physical? Time will tell I suppose... looking back in 20 years time I will probably know the answer why this amazing friendship came across my path.

Then I also have this list of truths that I have found very helpful at such times, just like KatieB I think I will share what I found to be some important maxims in the daily grind of things, so here are 45 instructions for life...

1. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
2. Memorize your favorite poem
3. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want
4. When you say, "I love you", mean it.
5. When you say, "I'm sorry",look the person in the eye.
6. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.
7. Believe in love at first sight.
8. Never laugh at any one's dreams.
9. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.
10. In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.
11. Don't judge people by their relatives.
12. Talk slow but think quick.
13. When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask,"Why do you want to know?".
14. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
15. Call your mom.
16. Say "bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.
17. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
18. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; Responsibility for all your actions.
19. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
20. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
21. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.
22. Marry someone you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.
23. Spend some time alone.
24. Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.
25. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
26. Read more books and watch less TV.
27. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll get to enjoy it a second time.
28. Trust in God but lock your car.
29. A loving atmosphere in your home is so important. Do all you can to create a tranquil harmonious home.
30. In disagreements with loved ones, deal with the current situation. Don't bring up the past.
31. Read between the lines.
32. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.
33. Be gentle with the earth...and yourself.
34. Pray. There's immeasurable power in it.
35. Never interrupt when you are being flattered.
36. Mind your own business.
37. Don't trust someone who doesn't close their eyes when you kiss them.
38. Once a year, go someplace you've never been before.
39. If you make a lot of money, put it to use helping others while you are living. That is wealth's greatest satisfaction.
40. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a stroke of luck.
41. Learn the rules, then break some.
42. Remember that the best relationship is one where your love for each other is greater than your need for each other.
43. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
44. Remember that your character is your destiny.
45. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.

Of course my two favourite is the last one and number nine... typical for a Gemini I hear...
"The absence of alternatives clears the mind marvelously." Henry Kissinger (1923 - )

What are your resolutions?

Well I believe there's someone watching over you
They're watching every single thing you say
And when you die they'll set you down and take you through
You'll realise one day that

The grass is always greener on the other side
The neighbours got a new car that you wanna drive
And when time is running out you wanna stay alive
We all live under the same sky
We all will live we all will die
There is no wrong
There is no right
The circle only has one side

We all try hard to live our lives in harmony
For fear of falling swiftly overboard
But life is both a major and a minor key
Just open up the chord

But the grass is always greener on the other side
The neighbours got a new car that you wanna drive
And when time is running out you wanna stay alive

We all live under the same sky
We all will live
We all will die
There is no wrong
There is no right
The circle only has one side
Well I believe there's someone watching over you
They're watching every single thing you say
And when you die they'll set you down and take you through
You'll realise one day that

The grass is always greener on the other side
The neighbours got a new car that you wanna drive
And when time is running out you wanna stay alive
We all live under the same sky
We all will live we all will die
There is no wrong
There is no right
The circle only has one side

We all try hard to live our lives in harmony
For fear of falling swiftly overboard
But life is both a major and a minor key
Just open up the chord

But the grass is always greener on the other side
The neighbours got a new car that you wanna drive
And when time is running out you wanna stay alive

We all live under the same sky
We all will live
We all will die
There is no wrong
There is no right
The circle only has one side

A beautiful song Side by Travis but with a single flaw, there is wrong and right and this coming year I my wish is to be able to see this and not keep silent when wrong prevails. Another song that has good resolutions is Animal Song by Savage Garden...

Superstars and cannonballs running through your head
Television freak show cops and robbers everywhere
Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie
Which one is more human
There's a thought, now you decide

So all this made me come up with my latest playlist for the Screaming Tangerines called Resolution & Revolution;

44. Sarah Brightman - Here With Me (5:24)
45. Martin Solveig - Heart Of Africa (6:06)
46. Santana - America (4:35)

After listening to those songs here is my list for 2007, of which I hope to achieve at least 50% this year.

3. Believe in magic.
4. Stick to a project till the bitter end.
5. Be true to my roots in Family and Culture.
6. Be prepared to fight for freedom.
7. Remember to find Sanctuary and Silence each day.
8. Be a hero even if only to my cat!
9. Dance with wolves.
10. Be a good dad. My kids will one day decide which old age home they will place me in!

So there you have it...
"Tenderness and kindness are not signs of weakness and despair, but manifestations of strength and resolutions."

I wish I was a Punk Rocker with a four song meme.

Theater of the Soul has a music meme that I thought was worth duplicating here as well, so here goes but before you check out my list you may first want to do a popkwiz and test your pop music knowlege...
Question 1/3 - from 24 January 2005:
'I'm A Believer (Monkees) and Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon (Urge Overkill) were composed by whom?
Bob Dylan
Neil Diamond
Paul McCartney
Tim Harding
Answers in comments are acceptable:

Onward to the meme...
Four songs that you could listen to over and over:

Four songs that drive you up the friggin’ wall:
Do the funky chicken - Rufus Thomas
Popcorn - Crazy Frog (The original by Hot Butter is acceptable.)
The rain, the park and other things - The Cowsills
Gansta's paradise - Coolio

Four songs that you’re embarrassed (or should be)
to admit you like:
The numa numa song/SMS/Dragosteadin tei/Mayahoo or a hunderd other versions. But I like the original by O-Zone.
Bum num - Mabel.
Hooked on a feeling - Bay City Rollers.
Lucky - Britney Spears.

Four best driving songs:
Motorbiking - Chris Spedding
Alive - Celine Dion
Tears of pearls - Savage Garden
Sultans of swing - Dire Straits

Four songs that make you cry:
Wir sind wir - Paul van Dyk
A river for him - Linda Ronstad
My lovers gone - Dido
A tear in the open - DJ Tiesto, Kirsty Hawkeshaw on vocals

Four best risqué songs:
Take off your clothes - Peter Sarsted
The only thing that looks good on me is you - Bryan Adams
Lay your body down on me - Poison
Don't Cha - Pussycat Dolls

Four best kid songs:
Do, re, me - Julie Andrews from the Sound of Music
Puff the Magic Dragon - Peter, Paul and Mary
Heigh-Ho - From Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Four songs (hell, pick your own category and fill
it in) - With Angelic Voices:
Love is more - Ceoma & The Larx
Close to the edge - Solex
Deliver me - Sarah Briteman
Wonderful life - Tina Cousins (cover version of the hit by Black)

Four Songs That Make Me Smile
18 till I die - Bryan Adams
Queen of hearts - Juice Newton
All about the money - Meja
I wish I was a punk rocker - Sadi Thom (She sings about many songs I remember.)

and then I want to add two more of my own...
Four Songs that make you wanna dance:
Get the party started - Pink
Paint it black - Rolling Stones (although I prefer Vanessa Carlton's cover version.)
I turn to you - Melanie C or Mel C former Spice Girl.
Summertime Blues - Eddie Chochran

Four Fighting Songs (aka heavy metal/rock): (it's a male thing.)
Feur Frei - Rammstein
Planet Hell - Nightwish
Israel's Son - Silverchair
Tourniquet - Evanescence

I could actually carry on till the cows come home adding more catagories but before I bore you all to death I will
sign off with my latest favourite from Sandi Thom - I wish I was a Punk Rocker and yeah... I was still a teen in '69!
[Chorus:]
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
In '77 and '69 revolution was in the air
I was born too late into a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair

When the head of state didn't play guitar
Not everybody drove a car
When music really mattered and when radio was king
When accountants didn't have control
And the media couldn't buy your soul
And computers were still scary and we didn't know everything

[Chorus]

When pop stars still remained a myth
And ignorance could still be bliss
And when god saved the queen she turned a whiter shade of pale
My mom and dad were in their teens
And anarchy was still a dream
And the only way to stay in touch was a letter in the mail

[Chorus]

When record shops were still on top
And vinyl was all that they stocked
And the super info highway was still drifting out in space
Kids were wearing hand me downs
And playing games meant kick arounds
And footballers still had long hair and dirt across their face

[Chorus]

I was born too late into a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
"From the persistence of noise comes the insistence of rage.
From the emergence of tone comes the divergence of thought.
From the enlightenment of music comes the wisdom of... silence."
